- Start with a tablecloth large or small, vintage or new. This will be one side of the throw.
- Collect several pieces of fabrics with different textures, colors or patterns. Remember to hit the scrap bag for pieces of fabric that are too small to carry a project on their own, but too nice to just toss out.
- If some of the fabric pieces aren't long enough to span the width of the tablecloth, cut and sew them together with other fabrics.
- Lay the tablecloth out flat, then cover it with the strips of fabric. Arrange them for the final throw.
- Pin the fabric pieces each other with right sides together (figure A). Sew them together using a straight stitch on a sewing machine (figure B).
- Remove the pins and lay the finished piece over the tablecloth, right sides together. Position it so there is an equal amount of overhang on each side, then pin it to the tablecloth. Make sure the fabric stays flat, with no puckers or pulls.
- Use a straight stitch on the sewing machine to sew both long sides together. Sew one end closed; sew the other end most of the way closed, leaving a 10"-12" opening.
- Trim the excess fabric close to the edge of the tablecloth (figure C).
- Turn the piece right-side out and use a clothes iron to press all of the seams flat. Use a slip stitch to sew the opening closed.
