But remember to keep these outdoor-inspired beauties indoors; if you leave them on the patio, birds and squirrels may descend on your tasty decorations.
Seed PillowsMaterials: throw pillow heavy fabric or leather sisal or twine needle & thread glue gun with glue Weldbond glue birdseed, other small seeds
- Cover an old pillow or an inexpensive purchased pillow with a heavy-duty material such as leather or upholstery fabric.
- Use sisal or twine to create stem or vine designs. Hold the twine in place and stitch at a few points with heavy-duty upholstery thread. Secure it further with hot glue (figure A). If working with leather, be sure to use a needle appropriate for use with leather.
- The trick to this project is keeping the seeds from falling off the pillow. Put a small puddle of Weldbond glue on the pillow and spread it to cover the desired area (figure B).
- Immediately pour seeds onto the glue (figure C). When the glue is covered, press the seeds in, making sure all seeds come in contact with the glue (figure D).
If trying a different kind of glue, make sure it dries clear and has a strong hold.Michele Beschen also mixes tiny seeds with glue in a small cup or plate, then presses the mixture into the desired location on the pillow (figure E). Finish by pressing a layer of loose seeds into the top of the mixture. When the glue has dried completely, tilt the pillow to shake off loose seeds. You may not want to lay your head down on these pillows but they're sure to sprout some conversation!
