A dedicated doodler need never fear boring linens – at least, not if there’s a permanent marker around (figure A). You can use these little beauties to dress up anything from a shower curtain to a lamp shade.

Play up the texture and any patterns in the weave, or simply express yourself with any of the hundreds of marker colors out there. Even better: Good permanent markers live up to their name. The colors don’t run, don’t bleed and don’t wash out.

    Doodles for Everyone

Why keep all the doodling fun for yourself? Hang a blank art canvas in your guest room with a nearby container of markers, and invite your guests to leave their own doodles. This group art piece is a lot more fun than a regular guest book, and will become a favorite part of any visit (figure B).

You can create a fun marker container out of a regular soup can. Here’s how:

    • Use tin snips to remove the top of a soup can and half of the bottom of the can.

Safety Alert: Wear gloves whenever cutting metal – the cut ends can be very sharp.

    • Cut straight down the down the back of the can.

    • Cut the back half of the bottom of the can away from the sides. Fold the back half of the can bottom up at a 90-degree angle.

    • Bend the sides of the can outwards and use the tin snips to shape them like angel wings (figure C).

    • Paint the can and mount it on the wall by your guest doodling canvas (figure D). Fill it with markers, and your visiting artists are ready to go.

If you’re a true doodler – or you just can’s seem to find those teeny scraps of paper with great ideas on them – Michele Beschen suggests keeping a notebook or sketchbook handy. When you store all your doodles in one place, it’ll be easy to find a great idea the next time you have the urge to B. Original.
