The playroom Cristin and Cory Bond created for their three boys when they renovated the basement lacked color and style. The Material Girls add both -- and turn the room into a boy-friendly space at the same time.Room designed by Cat Wei.
The Bonds had bought a sofa in Cristin's favorite color, red (figure A), but that was as far as they got. The Material Girls selected fabrics in red, blue and tan and came up with some ideas for organizing the space--and more important, the toys--more efficiently. In this segment, Cristin and Cory paint the walls a shade of khaki (figure B), then Kelly and Cory cover pieces of fiberboard with felt to create storyboards for the boys. Since the cutouts stick to felt, no tacks are needed.
Felt-Covered BoardMaterials: 24"x36" piece of Homasoteandreg; board (available at home-improvement stores) 30"x42" piece of felt glue gun and glue sticks staple gun wall anchors and screws drill driver scissors stencils (or other patterns as desired) 1. Center Homasote on one piece of felt. Wrap the fabric to the back of the board and staple at the center of each side. Make sure the felt is distributed evenly and pulled tight. Continue stapling around board sides (figure C), leaving several inches staple-free on corner edges (figure D).
2. Miter the corners by folding each point in toward the board, stapling in place along the edges and trimming away the excess (figure E). Fold down the fabric that remains and staple in place to finish the miter (figure F). 3. Attach the boards to the wall with wall anchors and screws. 4. Glue a small piece of felt to cover each wall anchor where it attaches to the board. 5. Cut images out of contrasting felt using stencils or computer-generated figures for patterns (figure G).
