The concrete block walls, linoleum floors and standard-issue utilitarian furniture in Hilary Dulin and Lindsay Locke's dorm room were pretty grim. To brighten up the space, the Material Girls came up with a fun, bright palette of fabrics in hot pink, yellow and orange. In this segment, the coeds paint the walls a sunny yellow, then Kelly and Hilary cut flowers out of fabric and appliqué them to some store-bought comforters for a fun touch. The appliqués are simply ironed on using fusible fabric.Room designed by Kelly Keener.

Cut out the flower from the fabric that you choose (figure A). Lay out the material and cut out a 3' section of both the fabric for the flower and the fusible material. 2. Peel off the protective layer on the fusible material. Place the wrong side of the flower fabric onto the glue side of the fusible material. Put a press cloth on top (any old towel or sheet will work). Then using a clean, dry iron, press the two fabrics together (figure B).
