Paint the wood that is at the top and bottom of the lantern using a foam brush and the iridescent gold paint (figure A).
Draw a scallop (half circles) with the green paint around the top edge and bottom edge of the lantern and then go back and fill in with paint (figure B).
To make the roses, make a slightly scalloped circle with white paint and then go back and add some light pink and then red in the center. Paint three roses on each side of the lantern. Paint leaves with the roses and then add little branches with leaves (figure C).
Note: Gouache is similar to watercolor, but heavier and more opaque with a consistent, velvety finish.
The length of your chain will depend on where the lantern will hang. Twist beaded wired glass around the chain and attach the chain with a small piece of wire to the loop at the top of the lantern (figure D).
Note: Paper flowers are a great alternative to wired glass.
You can add a fabric tassel at the bottom of the lantern for a final touch.
