    Balloon Flute

    Project designed by Addi Somekh.

    Materials:

a tool to cut PVC pipe
    electric drill
    1/2" drill bit
    sandpaper
    safety goggles
3/4" PVC pipe (or another tubular material)
    scissors
    11" balloons (two per flute)
    skinny balloons (two per flute)

    PHOTO

    Figure A

    1. Cut PVC pipe to desired length.

Note: For a higher pitch flute, use a shorter length PVC0

    2. Drill a clean hoe in the middle of the PVC pipe, and sand the hole.

      Safety Tip. Wear safety goggles.

    3. Cut the mouthpieces off of the 11" balloons. (This is just like what was done when making the balloon drum.) Discard the mouthpieces.

    4. Take the 11" balloon and put it over one end of the pipe. Secure it by wrapping a non-inflated skinny balloon around it several times and tying and trimming it (just as done for the balloon drum). Make sure the 11" balloon is not too tight and not too loose.

    5. Do the same thing to the other end (figure A).

Optional Step. Trim the excess that hangs below the skinny balloon.

    6. Blow in the flute hole and tap ends to make music.
