    Kids will love these colorful placemats: they're made from emptied-out juice pouches that have been sewn together and finished with decorative trim.

    Tools:

    8 juice pouches
    sewing machine
    thread
    scissors
    soapy water
    decorative trim

    Cleaning the juice pouches by cutting the gusset out of the bottom of each without separating the front from the back (figure A). Wash in soapy water, turn right side up and allow to air-dry before sewing.

    1. Lay out the placemat design. You should have four rows of two juice pouches (figure B).

    3. Working with each row, overlap the two pouches at the center point. Topstitch each row together at the center point (figure C). You can use a decorative zigzag stitch or a straight stitch. Continue stitching until you have completed all four rows. Trim away the threads.

    4. Working across the placemat, topstitch the four rows together, overlapping at the edges (figure D). As before, you can use a decorative zigzag stitch or a straight stitch. Trim away the threads.

    5. Sew decorative trim around the outside edge of the placemat.
