Fruit, spices and candles make for a fragrant combination that gives off scent-sational results.
Orange Candle Supplies: thick-skinned oranges or grapefruits cloves paring knife mellon baller metal tea light 1. Cut a hole in the fruit that's slightly larger than the diameter of the tea light. Use a knife to gently trace and carve out the area where the tea light will sit (figure A).
2. Use the melon baller to remove bits of fruit and create a well for the candle to sit (figure B).
3. Place a tea light in the well and press cloves into the skin to release the aromatic oils of the fruit and spice (figure C). If the fruit is thick-skinned, use a toothpick or a bamboo skewer to make the initial opening before inserting cloves (figure D).
Pomander CenterpieceMaterials: cake stand 2 small glass plates 13 grapefruits cloves whole star anise greenery 1. Create stripes, circles and swirls with the cloves by gently pressing them into the fruit (figure A). If desired, first use a pencil to create patterns.
2. Layer a bed of greenery on a cake stand and place 5 clove-studded fruits on the stand (figure B).
3. Next, place a glass plate on top of the fruit, add greenery to the plate and top off with 4 clove-studded fruits (figure C). Add a second glass plate, add more greenery and top with 3 clove-studded fruits. 3. Use a glue gun to secure the fruit in place, if necessary. Top with the remaining piece of fruit. Add additional greenery to any "holes" and place star anise in highlighted positions (figure D).
