Materials: 4"x4" scrap of metallic leather (base color) 4"x4" scrap of metallic leather (bird color) scissors leather glue jewelry glue metal pin back #5 and #2 leather punches craft hammer protected mat 12" gold jewelry chain 1 small jump ring jewelry pliers rhinestone for eye bird template #1 (bottom layer) bird template #2 (top layer) bird template #3 (wing placement)
1. Cut out the leather using bird templates #1 and #2. Template #1 will be the base color and template #2 will be the bird color (figure A). 2. Working on a protective mat and using a #5 leather punch, punch decorative holes along the edge of the leather bird (template #2) (figure B). 3. Using template #3 as a guide and a #2 leather punch, punch holes for the chain wings through the leather bird (template #2) (figure C).
4. Cut the chain into three equal parts. Working on the front side of the leather bird, place three ends of the chain into one wing hole and the other ends into the remaining wing hole (figure D). Line up the chains to create a swooping winglike shape. Trim away any excess chain. 5. Working on the backside of the leather bird, attach the ends of the chains together with a jump ring (figure E). 6. Using leather glue, attach the leather bird to the leather base (figure F). Be sure to line up the chain wings before gluing. Apply glue to the back of the bird (including the chain) and the top of the base. Press together and follow the manufacturers instructions for glue drying time.
7. Attach a bird eye by using jewelry glue to glue a rhinestone in the appropriate place. 8. Glue a pin back to the back of the bird.
