    1. Determine the length of the wire by measuring the length you wish the finished piece to be, and then add six inches. Cut three strands to this length.

    2. With one of the four inch lengths of wire, create a wrapped loop large enough to slip onto the "stem" of the netsuke.

    3. Slide a 5mm crystal onto the tail of the wire, and then finish the other end with another wrapped loop.

    4. Take the other three strands of wire, and then pass them through a 5mm crystal, the cicada pendant (figure A), and another 5mm crystal. Center these on the strands of wire, and then place a spring clip next to the grouping on one side.

    5. On the free side of the necklace, select one strand and begin stringing the following sequence:

    2-1/2" seed beads
    1 5mm crystal
    3 seed beads
    1 heishi
    9 seed beads
    1 art bead
    1 heishi
    3 seed beads
    1 5mm crystal

    6. Repeat this sequence until you have reached the third art bead. Put a spring clip on the end of this strand, but don't crimp.

    7. With the second strand, begin stringing the following sequence:

    5 seed beads
    1 4mm stone
    5 seed beads
    1 4mm stone
    5 seed beads
    1 4mm stone
    3 seed beads
    1 oblong stone bead

    8. Adjust the sequence as you go in order to be sure the oblong bead falls between the art beads on the previous strand. Continue until you reach the length as the first strand. Put a spring clip on the end of the strand, but don't crimp.

    9. With the remaining strand, sting the following sequence:

    3 12-cut seed beads
    1 4mm faceted bead
    1 12-cut seed bead
    1 4mm faceted bead
    1 12-cut seed bead
    1 4mm faceted bead
    1 12-cut seed bead
    1 4mm faceted bead

    Figure C
    10. Repeat this sequence until you have reached the same lengths as the first two strands. Put a string clip on the end of the strand, but don't crimp.

    11. Repeat these steps for the other side of the necklace (figure B).

    12. On one side of the necklace, braid the three strands (figure C). Repeat this step for the opposite side of the necklace.

    13. Test the length to be sure that it will lie where you prefer. Keep in mind that the cones and toggle clasp will take up approximately two inches of length. Adjust the beads on each strand to the desired length and ensure that they are even.

    14. On one braid, remove the clips and run all three strands of wire through the bead cap and art bead of the first strand.

    15. On the other side of the art bead, string a 4mm stone and a crimp bead over all three strands.

    16. Put a string clip on the three strands while you complete the next step.

    17. With one length of your 22g wire, create a wrapped loop on one end.

    18. Pass all three strands through the loop, and then back through the crimp bead.

    19. Cinch everything up, and then close the crimp bead. Trim away the excess.

    20. Repeat steps 14 through 19 for the opposite side of the necklace.

    21. Slide the cone and a 5mm crystal onto the wire so that the cone covers the wrapped loop and crimped ends of the braid.

    22. Begin a wrapped loop on the other side of the wire, and then add the circle half of the toggle. Finish the wrapped loop.

    23. Repeat on the other braid, and add two 5mm crystals. The additional crystals will allow the bar portion of the toggle to work properly.

    24. Try experimenting with different focal pieces, color combinations, and beads.
