Guest Kathy Murillo explains how kids can make their own friendship rings using easy wire and colorful beads.
Experience Level: Beginner Materials:1 roll silver 20-gauge wire 1 roll silver 24-gauge wire 14mm crystal or glass bi-cone (diamond shape) beads needle nose pliers with cutter
1. Cut a piece of the 20-gauge wire into a 12 inch strand. Wrap it around the finger two times where you'll be wearing the ring for a thin ring, or three times for a thick ring. Cut off the extra wire (figure A).2. Cut a piece of 24-gauge wire into a 12 inch strand. Using the pliers, make a small "hook" at one end. Attach the hook onto the ring slightly off-center. Wrap it around tightly three times (figure B), and then crimp in place with pliers. 3. With the wire pointing straight up, slide on the first bead, and then wrap it around one time (figure C). Again, with the wire pointing up, slide on the next bead and continue the process, adding up to five beads. 4. With the remainder of the wire, wrap it around the ring tightly three times, crimp in place using pliers. 5. Cut off any extra wire.
Tips:If you plan on making these to sell or as gifts, make perfect circles for your rings by visiting a bead store and buying a ring sizer (figure D). For variation, use different colors of wire or letter beads.
