Guest Mary Jo Hiney shares how to create a Dahlia brooch made from colorful fabrics.
Experience Level: BeginnerMaterials: 7"x11" pieces of silk fabric (fuchsia, orange, gold, coral) 1-1/2" half ball cover button 2"x4" piece of rust wool felt 1-1/2" pin back matching threads hand-sewing needle tacky glue (optional) rotary cutter cutting mat gridline ruler straight pins fabric scissors iron ironing board
1. Cut six 3-1/2 inch squares each from fuchsia and gold silk fabrics.2. Cut five 3-1/2 inch squares from orange silk fabric. 3. Fold and press each square in half diagonallyforming a triangle. 4. Fold the triangles in half again to form a smaller triangle. 5. Fold the outer corners of one triangle over to overlap at the center along the straight (raw) edges.
6. Pin the overlap at the center (figure A).7. Repeat this process for each pressed triangle, forming the individual petal shapes. 8. Working with the fuchsia and orange petal pieces, use quadrupled thread and gather-stitch across the raw edges of one fuchsia petal, placing the stitching 1/4 inch upward from the raw edges. Pull the gathers as tightly as possible, and then secure the thread. Don't cut the thread. 9. Gather-stitch across the raw edges of an orange petal in the same manner, using the attached thread (figure B). Pull the gathers as tightly as possible, and then secure the thread. Don't cut the thread. 10. Continue to gather-stitch the fuchsia and orange petals as in the steps above, working with the remaining petal pieces in a random color pattern. Join the last petal to the first petal, and then secure the thread, forming the outer or bottom petal layer for the dahlia. 11. Working with the gold petal pieces, repeat steps eight through 10 to form the upper petal layer. 12. Sew the upper petal layer to the bottom petal layer along the gathered centers.
13. Cut a two inch circle from the felt. Sew the circle to the underside of the bottom petal layer (figure C).14. Cover the button with coral silk fabric. Sew or glue the button to the center of the upper petal layer. 15. Sew the pin back to the center of the two inch felt circle. 16. Cut a 1-1/4 inch circle from the felt. 17. Open the pin, and then place the 1-1/4 inch circle over the two inch circle. 18. Hand sew the circle in place.
