  • The Layered Look: Layered Gold and Silver Chains by Jackie Guerra
  • From "Jewelry Making"
    episode DJMK-505

In this final segment host Jackie Guerra takes hold of a hot idea this season and recreates it in a luxurious look. She uses several chains in different sizes and lengths, both gold-filled and silver, and adds some wire wrapping with crystals, and at least on stunning pendant. The result -- put them all on at the same time and knock their socks off or wear them singly and be the soul of discretion.

    Layered Gold and Silver Chains

    1. Choose the chains you like and decide how long you want them to be.

    2. Create a lariat with a delicate 36" length of chain and top it off with a dangle of your choice. When you use a chain, no jump ring is needed. Put a headpin through the dangle, make a loop and wrap it.

Note from Jackie: When you use an uneven number of beads for your dangles, it is more pleasing to the eye.

    Tips from Jackie on Chains:

    • Cut apart a chain that is too short and add links of wire wrapped beads.

    • Put a lot of delicate bead dangles on a choker.

    • Mix and match metals and beads.

    • Keep a theme going with only one or two colors.

    • When you mix and match silver and gold chains and large and small chains and beads, etc., you get a really classic and funky look.

    • What ties your chains all together is the repetition -- use the same beads (i.e. pearls and garnets) on all your chains.

    • You can wear the chains one at a time or wear two or three at the same time.
