  • Memory Pendant by Jackie Guerra
  • From "Jewelry Making"
    episode DJMK-502

You were there when the Rolling Stones brought 10,000 people screaming to their feet -- the most exciting event of your life. This is more important than a scrapbook -- so wear your ticket around your neck. Host Jackie Guerra sandwiches that ticket between a foundation of polymer clay and clear glass, wraps the clay around the glass as a frame and includes the wire bail for the pendant. Bake it, cord it, and wear it.

    Experience Level: Intermediate

    1. Using a microscope slide as a template (figure A), cut out ticket (or a copy) and a piece of colored paper for the backing.

    2. Add a second slide to protect the back.

    3. Temporarily hold the sandwich of slides, ticket and backing together with two small pieces of low tack tape.

    4. Cut 5-1/2" of silver wire and smooth it as straight as possible with nylon jawed pliers. The flat side of the wire will be next to the slides and the round side will face away.

    5. Grip with the flat nose pliers 2" from the end, and bend the short end down 90 degrees (away from the half-round curve) and back up in the opposite direction. Repeat 1-1/2" further along the long end of the wire. The flat section created in the center of the wire will be the top of the framework for the slide.

    6. Use the round nose pliers to make a loop that touches itself. You should have about 1-1/2" of wire on either side extending down (figure B).

    7. Carefully fit the silver frame with loops around the top and two sides of the slide/ticket.

    8. Cut a strip of "silver" metal repair tape 3/8" wide.

    9. Use a piece that is 1-1/2" long and stick it to the top front of the slide, 1/8" in from the edge. Wrap it carefully over the top, including the silver wire, and down on the back of the slide. Smooth carefully.

    10. Use a second piece of repair tape that is about 4-1/2" long, and repeat the sealing around the other three sides of the slide. Clip the corners so the tape lies flat (figure C). Smooth for a sleek finish.

    11. Attach chain and clasp.
