    Materials --

    Rough granite
    1/4" acrylic rod sticks, cut into 4" lengths

    Tools --

    Lapidary saw
    Lapidary grinding/polishing machine
    Instant glue (cyanoacrylate adhesive)
    Protective eyewear
    1/4" acrylic rods, cut into 4" segments

    Here's a sample of some other great cufflinks.
    Groom Cufflinks

    1. Use the lapidary saw to cut the rough rock into slices.

    2. Cut the slices into smaller chunks, closer to your desired final shape (figure A).

    3. Glue chunks of rock onto acrylic sticks with instant glue.

    4. Use the lapidary grinding unit to grind the chunks into a cabochon shape (flat on bottom, rounded on top).

    5. Change discs on the lapidary unit to sand and smooth the stone (figure B).

    6. Continue changing discs with progressively finer grit until all sanding marks are gone and a polish is achieved.

    7. Snap the finished cabochon off the stick. You now have a beautiful gemstone. All that's left is to construct a setting for it with silver or gold.
