  • Chandelier Pendant
  • From "Jewelry Making"
    episode DJMK-202

    PHOTO

Put your grandparents' old love letters, your family's historic documents and other interesting text to good use -- but don't forget to first make copies for use in jewelry making!
Guest artist Linda Blinn offers a technique for creating a chandelier pendant that showcases vintage memorabilia.

    Materials:

    Crystal with a flat back
Collage items (snippets of vintage letters, postage, transparencies, or a combination of media)
    Diamond Glaze
    Old jewelry parts
    Ribbons, charms, embellishments
    Chain or cord
    Scissors
    Measuring tool

    1. Apply transparent glass paint (figure A) to the back of the crystal, leaving the center area clear or just lightly painted.

    2. Apply copper foil around the edge of crystal and burnish with your finger or small, round dowel (figure B) pencil or other item. The foil will not create a perfect metallic appearance, but should provide a crackled, aged appearance (figure C). If desired, further "age" the crystal using Prismacolor pens.

    3. Arrange collage materials, then place crystal atop the collage media and adjust composition (figure D). If using transparencies, trace around the edge of the crystal onto the transparency and cut with scissors.

    4. Affix the collage media to back of crystal (so that it can be seen through the top surface). Position carefully before pressing and allowing to dry.

    5. After it's dried, a final layer of glaze can be added over the entire back of crystal.

    6. Add a part from vintage jewelry to the existing wire on the crystal

    7. Measure the cord to be the exact length desired, then attach cord or chain to the chandelier piece.
