  • From "Jewelry Making"
    episode DJMK-113

    PHOTO

Something beaded, something blue: a garter for the bride who wants a little more razzle-dazzle to her "special day" accessories.
Although many brides choose not to wear or toss a garter, this project adds a dazzling twist on tradition for those who do. Guest May Jo Hiney shares her technique.

    1. Stabilize satin strip for hand beading with a 1" wide strip of fusible interfacing.

    2. Use a disappearing ink pen to mark the center of the strip on the front side at 1" intervals, starting 1-1/2 inches from the end (figure A).

    3. Begin beading the center of the strip and extend thread to the next interval on the underside (figure B).

    4. Sew the long edges of the strip together once the center of the strip is completely beaded. Strip is turned right side out and pressed flat at edges. Stitch the tube 1/4" from edges on the long sides to create the casing for the elastic.

    5. Mark to create the beaded fringe along the bottom edge of the tube.

    6. To begin beading without a knot, double the thread and run both ends through the eye of the needle. Pull the needle through the point where the fringe is to begin and run it through the loop of thread you’ve created.

Add beads for the 2 alternating styles of fringe. Style 1:5 seed beads, 1 other bead, 1 seed bead 1 tulip bead, 1 seed bead to anchor, then run back up thru the other beads (figure C). Style 2: 3 seed beads, 1 other bead, 3 seed beads, 1 other beed, 1 seed bead, 1 tulip bead, 1 seed bead to anchor, then run back up thru all the beads.

    7. Travel within the edge of the tube to the next beaded fringe mark.

    8. Insert elastic and hold in place with pins.

    9. Sew the ends together wrong sides together with a 1/4" seam.

    10. With a strip of satin 4" square, fold in 2 opposite sides and wrap around the seam and stitch together in the back.
