  • Jackie Guerra's Friendship Bracelet
  • From "Jewelry Making"
    episode DJMK-103

    PHOTO
Host Jackie Guerra still smiles when she thinks of friendship bracelets -- particularly one her father gave her as she went off to college. Here, Jackie shares her friendship bracelet technique.

    Materials:

8 colors of 6-ply embroidery cotton
    Scissors
Clipboard or bulldog clip and cardboard

    1. Choose 8 colors of embroidery floss and cut 36" strands from each color. (Measurement tip: A good way to gauge 36" is to hold the floss on the tip of your nose, while extending the floss out the length of your arm while holding the floss between two fingers. The distance from your nose to your fingertips should be approximately 36".)

    2. Knot the strands together 6" from one end. Use the clipboard or bulldog clip to secure the knot at the top end of the strand.

    3. Make a forward knot with strand 1 around 2; 3 around 4; 5 around 6; and 7 around 8. Note: Threads have now changed positions and will be named for the new positions.

    4. Reverse direction and make a backward knot with strand 7 around 6, 5 around 4, and 3 around 2. Threads have now changed positions again.

    5. Repeat steps 4 and 5 until the bracelet is as long as you wish. Make a knot to tie all the strands together. Braid the leftover strands and knot at the end. Trim the excess.
