  • Magic Polymer Clay Beads
  • From "Jewelry Making"
    episode DJMK-101

Host Jackie Guerra shares her secret technique for turning polymer clay leftovers into colorful new beads.

    Materials:

    2 oz. leftover clay
    Waxed paper
    Suede cord
    Rolling pin or brayer
    Cutting blade
    Craft knife
    Needle tool (for piercing)
    Wed/dry sandpaper (400-800 grit)
    Coarse sandpaper (40-60 grit)

    1. Squeeze the scraps of leftover clay to adhere, but avoid blending. Roll the clay into a tube.

    2. Twist the tube to create a vertically-oriented swirl of colors.

    3. Roll the tube on a work surface (ceramic tile works well) to make it even. Push ends back toward center to square them and create a rectangular shape. Cut lengthwise through the center, then cut lengthwise twice more.

    4. Pierce beads with needle or skewer to create holes. Bake at temperature recommended for your type of clay (usually about 265 degrees for 20 minutes).
