Crafter Joe Lamancusa decorates a tote bag for a young child using felt cutouts and glitter paint. Then he enhances a book bag with miniature lights, charms and friendship pins for older kids.

    Small Tote

    Materials:

    Small canvas tote bag
    Felt
    Cookie cutters
    Fabric glue
    Pencil
    Scissors
    Craft stick
    Wiggly eyes
    Beads or jewels
    Glitter paint

    1. Place cookie cutters on felt, and trace around the shapes with a pencil. Joe used hearts and stars.

    2. On the back of the felt shapes, apply fabric glue around the outside, and spread it with a craft stick.

    3. Glue the felt cutouts in a design on the tote bag (figure A).

    4. Glue wiggly eyes onto the shapes. Glue on beads or jewels too (figure B).

    5. Apply glitter paint around the edges of the cutouts. The paint will add decoration and also help hold the cutouts on the bag. Add other paint embellishments such as wavy lines or squiggles around the bag (figure C).

    6. Tie spirals of ribbon to the base of the handles.
    Book Bag

    Materials:

    Backpack
    Miniature lights
Gold charms shaped like holly leaves
    Ribbon
    Fabric glue
    Safety pins
    Small beads
    Scissors
    Crinkle ribbon
    Small ribbon bows

    1. Punch randomly placed holes in a backpack book bag.

    2. String miniature lights through the holes from inside the bag. Secure the battery pack for the lights on the inside.

    3. Use fabric glue to attach holly-shaped gold leaves around the lights. The green lights will be the center, with three leaves around each light (figure D).

    4. String three or four small beads on a safety pin to create friendship pins--each bead signifies a special attribute of a friend such as loving, caring, listening, etc. (figure E).

    5. Pin friendship pins all over the bag, and share them with friends (figure F).

    6. Glue small bows around the bag.

    7. Glue crinkle ribbon around the perimeter of the bag.
