  • Microscope Slide Brooch by Robin Beam
  • From "Jewelry Making"
    episode DJMK-509

Make science fun again by taking regular microscope slides and changing them into sweet brooches. Guest jewelry designer Robin Beam joins host Jackie Guerra to demonstrate how to take an old black and white photo, color and age it, frame it in a microscope slide, add embellishments and voila -- you get a gorgeous brooch. And you thought science was boring in high school.

    Microscope Slide Brooch

    1. Print out photo in black and white on printer.

    2. Rub Cut n' Dry Nibs over Distress inkpad and "tint" photo (figure A).

    3. "Age" photo by lightly rubbing edges with fine grit sandpaper. Rub another color into scraped photo.

    4. Incorporate matching themed die cut or sticker, distressing with sandpaper and Distress Ink.

    5. Place clean Memory Glass over the finished photo, or sandwich between two pieces.

    6. Cut a length of foil tape. Remove a portion of the paper backing from the foil. Lay sticky side up on the Non-Stick Craft Sheet.

    7. Center glass onto middle of exposed tape and "roll" tape along the four sides of the glass, making sure to keep it in the center of the tape (figure B). Do NOT fold the tape down yet. When you get to the fourth side, overlap tape a little and cut straight.

    8. Evenly push the tape onto either side of the glass (figure C), starting in the center, then "mitering" the corners to make it a neat "fold."

    9. Flatten down all sides (front, back, edge) with plastic foil tape burnisher.

    10. Add wire with a decorative hanging charm (figure D). Add a pin back/bale and wear as a pendant or place onto a chain.

Option: You can decorate with rub-on words, stickers, etc. also (figure E).
