    Spicy Apple Cider

    Ingredients:

    1 cup brown sugar
    1/2 tsp. salt
    2 tsp. whole allspice
    2 tsp. whole cloves
    1/4 tsp. nutmeg
    3 cinnamon sticks
    1 dried orange peel
4 qt. apple cider, cranberry juice or red wine
    spice pouch (muslin or cheesecloth)
    recycled jars
    ribbon

Combine sugar, salt, allspice, cloves and nutmeg in bowl (figure A).

Break up the cinnamon sticks and orange peel into 1/2" pieces and add to mixture.

For gift giving: create a spice pouch by packaging 1/4 cup of the mixture in a 7x7" square of muslin or cheesecloth tied with cotton string and wrapped in cello with a serving instructions tag (figure B).

For larger serving gifts, recycled jars can be decorated and tied with ribbon and serving instructions (figure C).

Serving Instructions for the Mulling Spice Poudh — Add spice pouch to one quart of apple cider, cranberry juice or red wine and simmer for 20 minutes. Remove pouch and serve hot with optional pat of butter on top or garnish with clove studded orange slice.

Serving Instructions for the Whole Recipe — Add mixture to four quarts of apple cider, cranberry juice or red wine and heat in soup or crock pot. Simmer for 20 minutes. Strain and serve hot with optional pat of butter on top or garnish with clove studded orange slice.
