  • Metallic Christmas Trees
  • Let these metal marvels sparkle on your walls and tabletops.
    From "B. Original"
    episode DBOR-513

The holidays are shiny and bright when you make these fun metallic Christmas trees with Micheleo Beschen. The B. Original host shows how to craft large, wall-mounted trees from metal roof flashing and garden edging, then wraps cones in metal pot scrubbers for a rough-and-tumble tabletop look. Scroll down to get started.

    Wall-Mounted Metal Christmas Tree

    Materials:

    thin plywood or foamcore
    copper roof flashing
    aluminum garden edging
    staple gun
    hammer
    tin snips
    heavy gloves

    • For a shiny wall tree, trace and cut a simple tree shape out of thin plywood or foamcore (figure A).

    • Wrap a strip of copper roof flashing – available in the roof and gutter sections of home improvement stores – tightly around the tree. Attach the flashing to the back of the tree with staples (figure B). If the staples don't go all the way through the copper, help them along with a couple of taps from a hammer

Safety Alert: Wear heavy gloves and use caution when cutting and handling the roof flashing and garden edging. The cut edges can be extremely sharp

    • Wrap a strip of aluminum garden edging across the tree, overlapping the copper slightly, and secure to the back with staples.

    • Continue wrapping strips of metal around the tree, alternating colors, until the tree is covered (figure C). Curl the edges of the aluminum or add some shiny garland if desired.

    Metal Tabletop Christmas Tree

    Materials:

    foam cones, various sizes
    metal pot scrubbers
    felt
    scissors
    white glue

    • Dismantle some metal pot scrubbers. These are available in a steel or brass-like finish.

    • Unroll one pot scrubber into a tube, then slide the scrubber over a foam cone like a sock (figure D). Scrunch it down toward the bottom of the cone, then add another scrubber.

    • Keep adding scrubbers until the cone is covered (figure E). Michele Beschen says it takes about three pot scrubbers to cover a 10" cone.

    • To protect furniture, cut a circular piece of felt and attach it to the bottom of the cone with white glue.

    • Make an assortment of these trees in different sizes for a fun grouping on any holiday table.
