    Poinsettia Brooch
    Create flower base:
Using two size-10 dpn and FC yarn, co 9 over three dpn. Work 7 rounds.
Place 6 sts on a stitch holder.
You are now going to work only the three sts remaining on the dpn. Turn work after each row, as if working on standard straight needles.

Create first trio of large outside petals:
**Your first row is a p row. This is correct, even though working in p will break from the St st pattern of the red base of the flower. The goal is to have the k side of the flower facing upward as it comes out of the base, and the p side of the petal facing downward as it comes out the base.

For the pattern below, use a bar increase, where you make two stitches by knitting in the front and back of one stitch.

***Row 1: P, inc 1 st at each end (5).
Row 2: K, inc 1 st at each end (7).
Row 3: P, inc 1 st at each end (9).
Row 4: K, inc 1 st at each end (11).
Row 5: P, inc 1 st at each end (13).
Rows 6-11: Work in St st.
Row 12: K, dec 1 st at each end (11).
    Row 13: P.
Rows 14-19: Repeat rows 12 and 13 three times (5).
    Row 20: K1, k2 tog twice (3).
    Row 21: P.
Row 22: K2 tog. Break red yarn. Thread end back through last st and weave in end.***

    Second petal:
Remove 3 sts from the holder and place on dpn. Using a new strand of red yarn, follow pattern between ***s. Make sure work is oriented so the k side of the petal is upward.

    Last petal:
Remove last three sts from the holder. Place on DPN. Using a new strand of red yarn, follow pattern between ***s. When you are done with this first grouping of petals, weave in all ends. **

Create second trio of large petals:
Co 9 sts over three dpn. Work 7 rounds. Repeat pattern between **s.

    Create medium petals:
Co 9 sts onto size-10 straight needles (you can use dpn if you'd like.) Use a bar increase, where you make two stitches by knitting in the front and back of one stitch.
    Row 1: Working in k, inc 1, k1, inc 1 (5).
Stop! Place the remaining 6 sts on a holder. Now turn the work and continue in the pattern below.

    *Row 2: P1, inc 1, p1, inc 1, p1 (7).
    Row 3: K1, inc 1, k2, inc 1, k2 (9).
Rows 4-7: Work in St st.
    Row 8: P1, p2 tog, p3, p2 tog, p1 (7).
    Row 9: K2, k2 tog, k3 (6).
Rows 10-11: Work in St st.
    Row 12: P1, p2 tog twice, P1 (4).
Rows 13-14: Work in St st.
    Row 15: K1, k2 tog, k1 (3).
    Row 16: P2 tog, p1 (2).
    Row 17: K.
Row 18: P 2 tog. Break red yarn. Thread end back through last st and weave in end.*

    Second petal:
    Remove 3 sts from holder. Working in k, inc 1, k 1, inc 1 (5).
Stop! Turn work and work pattern between *s.

    Third petal:
Remove last 3 sts from holder. Working in k, inc 1, k1, inc 1 (5).
Stop! Turn work and work pattern between *s.

Weave in all ends. As you weave in the cast-on tail, sew the first and last petal together at their bases so they form a trio of petals.

    Create small petals:
Co 9 sts on size-10 straight needles (you can use dpn, if you'd like.) Use a bar increase, where you make two stitches by knitting in the front and back of one stitch.

    Row 1: K1, inc 1, k 1 (4).
Stop! Place the remaining 6 sts on a holder. Now turn your work, and continue in the pattern below.

    #Row 2: P2, inc 1, p1 (5)
    Row 3: K2, inc 1, K2 (6)
    Rows 4: Purl
    Row 5: Knit
    Row 7: P2, P2 tog, P2 (5)
    Row 8: Knit
    Rows 9: Purl
    Row 10: K1, K2 tog, K2 (4)
    Row 11: Purl
    Row 12: K1, K2 tog, K1 (3)
    Row 13: Purl
    Row 14: K2 tog, K1 (2)
Row 15: P 2 tog. Break red yarn. Thread end back through last st and weave in end.#

    Second petal:
Remove 3 sts from holder. Row 1: K1, inc 1, k 1 (4). Stop! Turn work and work pattern between #s.

    Third petal:
Remove last 3 sts from holder Row 1: K1, inc 1, k 1 (4). Stop! Turn work and work pattern between #s.

Weave in all ends. As you weave in the cast-on tail, sew the first and last petal together at their bases so they form a trio of petals.

    Felting and drying:
Set washer to hot, on a heavy-duty cycle with low water. Add the flower pieces after the water begins agitating. Your pieces are done if all the stitches have disappeared and they are noticeably stiff to the touch. Once they are the desired consistency, pull them out and squeeze in a towel.

    Sew petal trios together:
Layer the felted petal trios on top of one another at their centers, placing the largest pieces on the bottom and the smallest on the top. The larger petal trios were designed with a small funnel at the center; accentuate the funnel by stuffing the base of the petal trio on the top into the funnel of the one on the bottom. Stagger the petals so they resemble a real poinsettia. Sew all four pieces together securely at the center using red yarn and a yarn needle. If desired, tack the outside edges of the largest petals to one another to enhance the shaping and stabilize the flower.

Cover the entire center with lots of French knots. Sew a brooch pin on the back and pin to your new scarf.
