1. Tape off the mirror to avoid accidental paint spatters (figure A). Holding the can 8"-10" away from the stencils, lightly spray the backs with stencil adhesive and place them along the border of the mirror (figure B).
2. Place painter's tape around the stencil edges; the tape will protect the frame from stencil paste. Scoop a small amount of stencil paste out of the jar with a 1" putty knife and transfer it to the 3" putty knife; spread paste over the stencils (figure C). Remove the stencils immediately while the stencil paste is still wet. If stencil paste drops on the frame, wipe away while still wet. Let the paste dry for 2-3 hours (figure D).
3. Prime the frame and let dry. Paint the frame with 1-2 coats of latex interior paint and let dry (craft paint can be used for this step, but interior paint will coat more evenly and will not require as many coats to achieve full coverage) (figure E). Next, mustard-colored paint, applied with a fairly dry brush, is used to highlight the raised stencil designs (figure F). Let paint dry. 4. Mix a few drops of gold metallic paint with glazing medium to create a sheer gold color; play with proportions of paint and glazing medium to achieve the desired hue. Use a cotton rag to apply the glaze over the entire frame (figure G). Remove painter's tape and let the frame dry before hanging.
