The warm wood and comfortable styles of the arts and crafts movement developed in direct opposition to the mechanical environs of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Through-tenons are one of hallmarks of arts and crafts furniture. Although they're practical in purpose -- the creation of sturdiness and stability -- many consider them to be decorative elements as well.

Arts and crafts furniture also features pegged joints and square -- rather than mitered -- corners.

A truly American style of furniture and homes, the arts and crafts movement spread across the country from 1900 to 1920. Originally an artistic reaction to industrialization, the arts and crafts style became influenced by Japanese design, as well as the aesthetic movement.

Arts and crafts furniture has a distinctive style that can be easily identified by simplicity combined with attention to detail and craftsmanship (arts and crafts furniture was almost exclusively handmade). Some of the famous names synonymous with the movement include Frank Lloyd Wright (who designed and built furniture to blend with the architecture of his buildings and homes), Gustav Stickley and William Morris.

Although coffee tables weren't popular at the turn of the century, DIY Woodworking host Bruce Johnson builds a design that incorporates arts and arafts details and blends beautifully with any traditional arts and crafts decor or casual setting.
