If you're intrigued by the arts and crafts style but don't want to commit to it fully, incorporate its elements with those of other styles. Designer Noel Jeffrey pulled elements of various styles together in the design of an arts and crafts-inspired interior in East Hampton, New York. Mission-style furnishings and accessories -- including simple, unadorned oak chairs, occasional tables, a pair of rare relief-carved chairs and a collection of antique clocks -- set the tone of the living room. A Spanish rug in earthy tones of rose and terra cotta picks up the rose of a pair of Wiener Werkstatte couches. The clean lines of the German couches work beautifully with simple mission-style furnishings. A new coffee table made using the concepts of arts and crafts design is inset with handmade tiles featuring organic forms of the period (figure A). Much of the lighting is provided by Tiffany lamps of the art nouveau period. The lamps' curvilinear lines and jewel tones contrast nicely with the simple mission-style tables they sit on (figure B).
