  • Stained Glass Candleholders
  • Create stunning candle holders from leftover glass.

    PHOTO

    Leftovers never looked so good.
Stained glass and candlelight are perfect companions: Each makes the most of the other's beauty. Michele Beschen brings the two together—and uses up odd bits of stained glass from her projects—by making these fun stained glass candleholders. It's a beautiful way to B. Original and make something new out of your leftovers.

Michele Beschen used bits and pieces from other projects to make these lovely pieces, but you also can use new glass. Scroll down for her how-to.

    Stained Glass Candleholders

    Materials:

several small pieces of stained glass
    foil tape
    flux, solder, soldering iron
    glass marbles
    12" x 12" mirror glass
    clamps

    • Lay out pieces of stained glass and see which ones you want to use to build the rectangular shapes of your candleholders. Use pieces that sit flat on the bottom.

    • Apply foil tape around the edges of each piece and burnish down well.

    • Assemble your piece; a few good clamps are helpful for this. You also can use small blocks of wood to help steady your work. Square up corners as much as possible (figure A). Brush flux over one or two points on the joint and tack them together with solder (figure B).

    • Once the two pieces are tacked into place, spread flux along the joint and solder the entire joint. Repeat for the rest of the joints.

    • If there's a large gap between two pieces, drip beads of solder into the gap (figure C) and keep adding to gradually fill it in (figure D).

    • Smooth out all ridges with a bead of solder.

    • To attach legs to your piece, wrap foil tape around the middle of four marbles, then flux and solder them to the bottom at each corner (figure E).

    • A 12" by 12" piece of mirror can make a lovely stand for your candleholders (figure F). Apply foil tape around the edge of the mirror and around the edge of some glass pieces. Lay out the glass in a pattern at the edge of the mirror, then apply flux and solder the pieces to the mirror at the tape joints.
