Crayon Batik Mirror- Color the paper using a wide variety of crayons. Make sure to press hard enough to cover the surface well. You should see small crayon shavings to indicate you are pressing hard enough.
- Once the surface of the paper is covered, crumple it up then flatten it out (figure A).
- Thin out black acrylic paint with a bit of water to the consistency of milk. Cover the surface of your colored paper with the paint. Use the paper towels to wipe off the paint before it dries. The paint will stick to the cracks in the surface of the paper. Let it dry completely.
- Once the paper is dry, heat up your iron to a medium high setting. Place your now batiked paper on paper towels and iron the wrong side until the paper is flattened.
- Cover the mirror section with a piece of scrap paper.
- Cut the batik paper into pieces that can accommodate your Xyron machine. Run them through the Xyron to attach the adhesive to the back.
- Using your C-through ruler and Exacto knife, cut your batiked paper into thin strips; about 1/4" wide.
- Use masking to mask off the mitered edges of the mirror frame.
- Peel off the protective backing from the batik paper, exposing the adhesive. Start applying the strips to the mirror (figure B), working from the inside (mirror-edge out). Slice off the excess at the masked off miter.
- Work opposite sides first then finish the remaining two sides.
- You may want to paint the edges of the mirror for aesthetics.
- Add one to three coats of Modge Podge to protect the paper and give it a nice finish.
- Stamp dragonfly stamp on white shrink plastic and cut to fit. Punch a hole in the top. Shrink with a heat gun and flatten if necessary.
- Cut black shrink plastic the same size as the dragonfly stamp and then hole punch. Shrink with heat gun and while still very hot, press rubber stamp on the shrink. This gives a relief to the plastic. Let cook and accentuate the raised portions with metallic rub-ons (figure C).
- Screw eye hooks into the bottom of the frame, and attach shrink plastic charms with jump rings.
