- Create a mask by cutting shelf liner into 2-1/2" strips. Punch 10 to 15 circles of each size in contact paper (figure A). It will make it easier to have the holes already made before you start so that you don't have to start and stop. Cut into pieces leaving at least a 1/2" border on three sides of the punched circle. Make sure all the punched images are clean. If not, clean them up with a craft knife over a cutting matte.
- Clean the punches with a mixture of citrus adhesive remover and Goo Gone, each sprayed onto a newspaper. Punch images until the puncher comes clean.
- Clean the glass with rubbing alcohol poured onto a paper towel. Let dry.
- Remove the carrier sheet from the back of the shelf liner and apply to the flask. Apply several pieces at a time but make sure that the punched circles remain clear (figure B). Work on one side at a time and lay the flask flat.
- Use the small spatula to apply the cream etch inside the circles. Do not allow the cream to touch the glass outside of the masks (figure C). Follow all manufacturers' directions.
- Wait 15 minutes. Scrape the excess etching cream off the glass container and put it back into the original container with the squeegee (figure D). (The etching cream can be reused.)
- Place the glass into plastic container of water and rub the excess cream off.
Tip: Etching cream can etch ceramic and that is why it is best to rinse if off in a plastic container. If you do use your ceramic sink, be especially careful when rinsing. Rinse thoroughly under running water, rinse, and wipe sink out well each time. - Remove the masks, dry the flask, and apply new masks in between the etched circles. Repeat previous step. Continue working in this manner, moving around the flask until the circles are etched all over the flask.
