  • Bottle Border
  • Add sparkle to your garden with a border made
    from bottles.
    From "B. Original"
    episode DBOR-147

These beautiful bottles are tougher than you'd think—but easy to install.
Michele Beschen, the B. Original host, edges many of her garden beds with old bottles that otherwise might be headed for the recycling bin. The technique is simple and easy, and the effect is beautiful. Even better, Michele Beschen's bottle border has stood the test of time without breakage.

Start saving those bottles, and scroll down for her easy how-to.

    Materials:

    glass bottles
    play sand
    funnel
    hollow pipe
    spade or small shovel
    hammer

Note: Your pipe must be small enough to fit easily through the necks of your bottles.

    • Fill your bottles with sand for weight and stability
      (figure A).

    • Dig a shallow hole where you want your bottle to go. Your bottles should be at different heights, so vary the depth of your holes. Remove any landscape cloth or anything else that's in the way.

    • Drive the pipe into the ground (figure B) until the part sticking up out of the ground is slightly shorter than your bottle. If your bottle has an indented bottom, leave less pipe sticking up from the ground to compensate.

    • Gently slide the bottle down over the pipe (figure C) until it's firmly seated. Fill in the hole around the bottle.

    • Keep installing bottles until your area is edged.

Try a few beautiful bottles in your garden!
