  • Outdoor 'Room' Divider
  • Spice up your outdoor space with a recycled-fencing divider.

Set off your outdoor space in style.
Outdoor space needs definition just as much as indoor space does, but you don't always want something as solid as a wall—or as time-consuming as a hedge.

Michele Beschen has a fun solution with this outdoor "room" divider made from recycled dog-kennel fencing. It's great for visually breaking up your outdoor space, defining the edge of a patio or even serving as a trellis for your climbing plants.

    Materials:

    chain-link fencing panels
    8' steel fencing stakes
    baling wire
    spray paint (optional)

    • Decide where you want to place your panels and drive an 8' steel fencing stake into the ground where the ends of the panels will go (figure A).

    • Attach the panel to the stakes by wrapping baling wire (available at your home improvement center) around the stake and the panel's side post (figure B).

    • Weave the baling wire through the panel and around the post all the way down to the ground, keeping the wire taut (figure C).

    • Tie off the wire at both ends. You can swirl the wire with pliers to for a decorative touch.

    • Repeat for the other side of the panel and for any other panels you want to install. You can spray paint them bright colors and scatter them through your yard for an interesting space-breaker!
