    Preppy Painted Pots

    Materials:

    clay pot
    patio paints: base color
    patio paints: argyle color
    terra-cotta marker: argyle highlight color
    water-based polyurethane
    disposable foam paintbrush
    medium-size flathead paintbrush
    scrap paper
    pencil

    1. Paint the entire pot in the base color and allow to dry per the manufacturer's instructions.

    2. Measure the height of the base of the pot (not including the lip). Create a diamond-shaped template from a scrap piece of paper that is 1.5" smaller than the height measurement and as wide as you wish the diamond to be.

    3. Center the template on the pot and trace around the template with a pencil (figure A). Working on both the right and left sides of the traced diamond shape (on the pot), line up the side point of the template to the side point of the traced diamond shape. Trace around the template until you have three diamonds in a row.

    4. Using a medium-size flat paintbrush and patio paints, paint the insides of the traced diamonds with the argyle color (figure B). Allow to dry per the manufacturer's instructions. You can apply two coats of paint for a deeper color.

5.Line up the template over the center of the painted diamond shapes. Trace around the template four times with a pencil, matching the side points as in step 3 (figure C). Using the terra-cotta marker, paint over the traced lines and allow to dry per the manufacturer's instructions (figure D).

    6. Coat the pot with two to three coats of clear polyurethane, allowing each coat to dry before applying the next.
