Materials:
Wire 3 coat hangers 14" grapevine wreath 11-1/2" diameter glazed pottery or ceramic bowl (we used green) River rocks (we used blue) Fresh grapevine (about 8 or 10 feet) Wire snips Pliers Note: Make sure the bowl you select is glazed and that the size of grapevine wreath grips the rim so that it will hold the bowl up in the air once you fill it with rocks and water. - Strip leaves off fresh grapevine.
- Put your safety glasses on and using your wire snips, cut the top parts of the 3 hangers off (figure A).
- Using your hands, straighten out the clothes hangers as much as you can. You can take the hangers out to the driveway and use a hammer to lightly tap out the kinks.
- Bend one end of each straightened clothes hanger to make a shape about the size of the top of the hanger you cut off -- to create a hook.
- Wire the straight ends of your hooks together at the top (figure B) and loop them over on the ends a little. You will put another wire through these 3 loops to tie it to the tree limb.
- Hook the ends of each of your three hangers to the underside of the wreath (figure C), dividing them into1/3 positions. Shape the wire at the bottom to hug the wreath.
- For extra security, take some wire and wire the hanger hooks to the wreath so that they will not flip off.
- Cover your coat hangers by wrapping them with fresh grapevine.
Note: The fresh grapevine is to disguise the hangers. The grapevine will die the next day and have to be replaced. If you want something more festive, you could use silk grapevine leaves or Sloan suggests silk flowers if you want to add color. Vicki even suggested using twinkling lights during the holidays. - Place river rocks in the bottom of your pottery bowl to about 2" from top.
- Place bowl inside center of wreath.
- Fill bowl with water to about 1" from top.
- Find a place to hang and enjoy.
