    Figure C

Artist Kim Gordon demonstrates a method for creating a whimsical metal garden ornament.

    Aluminum flashing
    Template of mermaid
    Pencil
    Shears
    File
    Hammer and nail
    Wooden board
    Spray metal primer
    Acrylic paints
    Sponges, brushes
100-grit sandpaper or #2 steel wool
    Acrylic varnish or shellac
    Raw umber tint
    Work gloves
    Denatured alcohol

    1. Flatten the flashing before tracing the mermaid template onto the metal surface (figure A).

    2. While wearing gloves for protection, carefully cut out mermaid shape (figure B).

    3. File sharp edges or bend them under, then use hammer and nail to create mermaid's features.

    4. Spray the metal with primer and allow to dry completely.

    5. Use a variety of acrylic paints creatively to create a gradient of color across the surface.

    6. Allow paint to dry, then lightly sand surface to age the piece.

    7. Add a couple of drops of raw umber tints to the varnish and apply over entire surface (figure C).

    8. Finally, spritz with denatured alcohol.
