    Funky Director's Chair
    Tools:

folding wood and canvas director's/deck chair
    gold spray paint
    craft foam with adhesive backing
4 yards crocheted lace, 1" wide
    scissors
    newspapers
optional: beaded trim and fabric glue

    1. Remove the canvas seat and back from the chair.

    2. Cut the foam into fun shapes, or if you prefer, use precut shapes (figure A) (figure B) (figure C). Depending on the style of chair you want to make, you might find the perfect shapes already cut at the craft store. The foam comes in 8"x10" sheets and cuts easily with craft scissors. Look for shapes on the Internet that can be used as templates.

    3. Lay the canvas chair seat and back right side up on the newspapers. Cut strips of the lace and line them up with the top and bottom edges of the canvas chair seat and back (figure D).

    4. Remove the self-adhesive backing from the foam shapes and stick them in the desired position on the canvas chair seat and back (figure E). Remember, the foam shapes will block the paint from the fabric and create a stencil (figure F) (figure G).

    5. Working about 12" from the chair seat and back, spray paint the canvas (figure H). Use a sweeping motion with the paint. Allow the paint to dry; recoat if necessary. Once it's dry, remove the lace and peel off the foam shapes.

    6. Optional: Attach beaded trim around the chair back with fabric glue.

    7. Reattach the canvas chair seat and back to the wood frame, then sit back and relax.
