These faux flowers are cute as a button.
Fake flowers don't have to be made of fabric – or look like real flowers, for that matter. Michele Beschen walks through a simple process for making whimsical blossoms out of colorful buttons and wire. The B. Original host shows how to create fanciful arrangements that could come straight out of your favorite children's book, and even shares her insider tip on how to twist long wires quickly.

    Scroll down for Michele Beschen's how-to. It's as easy as...buttoning a button.

    Materials:

    buttons
    beads
    colorful wires
    drill
    pliers
    clear vase or container

    • Create the faux flower stem by twisting different-colored wires together. Michele Beschen chose black baling wire, some silver picture-hanging wire and some copper wire. To twist them, cut off about 1' of each wire, twist the ends together and insert into a drill where the bit would normally go (figure A). Be sure to tighten the drill securely around the wires. Grab the other end of the wires tightly with a pair of pliers, then slowly use the drill to spin the wires together.

    • Split the wires apart at one end and thread buttons on the wire ends. Stack the buttons, using larger buttons on the bottom (figure B).

    • Curl the wire ends over to hold the buttons – and create a stamen at the top of your flower.

    • Use the same technique to make leaf clusters from green buttons.

    • Create a bountiful bouquet. To display, put sand (or a bunch of buttons) in the bottom of a clear vase or other container and arrange the flowers. Twist and curl the stems a little for a more interesting look (figure C). Secure the bouquet with more buttons or sand.
