    Figure C

Crafts expert Marty Brooks turns a color copy into a faux antique painting using crackle medium.

Materials: Color photo of painting of choice
    Heat-transfer paper
Piece of 100 percent cotton fabric, such as a bandanna
    Iron
    Tissue paper
    Prestretched artist canvas
    Decoupage glue
    Small sponge brush
    Stapler (or staple gun)
    Crackle medium or ink
    Water-based stain
    Old cloth

    1. Begin by having photo color-copied onto heat-transfer paper as a "mirror image".

    2. Center heat-transfer paper face down on cotton fabric and cover with tissue paper. Use iron to press 15 to 20 seconds in each area (figure A) until entire area has been pressed. Repeat using large, quick circular motion.

    3. Remove tissue diagonally, lifting slowly.

    4. Cover surface of the prestretched canvas with glue (figure B).

    5. Center print on canvas and press (figure C). Use hand to smooth any creases, then staple to edges of frame.

    6. Use a sponge brush to apply crackle medium/solution. Apply several coats to make the effect more dramatic.

    7. To emphasize cracks, apply water-based stain (after crackle medium has dried) to print's surface.

    8. If desired, select frame to complement the new print.
