Author and lifestyle expert Tracey McBride creates faux embellishments that look carved but are actually created with a special liquid plaster and a mold! Materials: Old newspaper or plastic Water putty (or plaster of Paris for projects that won't be painted) Water (amount will vary with size of project) Small disposable container Disposable stir stick Small, clean paintbrush Modeling/craft clay (not polymer) Cameo or other raised design or applique 4" sphere or lid (such as the metal top of a frozen orange-juice container or the plastic top of a potato-chip can) Water-based paint in antique white, cream or another color of your choice - Before beginning, cover work surface with a few layers of old newspaper or plastic.
- Roll clay to about 1/8" thicker than cameo or raised design (or substiture a purchased mold).
- To create mold, press cameo or other design into the clay and remove (figure A).
- Mix putty with water (or use plaster of Paris) in the disposable container according to manufacturer's directions. The mixture should be a smooth consistency.
- Pour the putty mixture into the clay mold (figure B) and wipe away any overrun.
- Allow design to dry thoroughly (30 minutes to an hour), then remove from mold.
- Apply remaining putty mixture to 4" lid or sphere and gently add the dry design to center. Allow the two to dry together.
- When the piece has thoroughly dried, add a coat of paint if desired. When paint has dried, the design can embellish almost any flat, smooth surface.
Tips:: - To keep water putty moist longer, add a teaspoon of vinegar or milk to the mixture.
- If there is a gap between the cameo and the disk or box, simply fill it in with a small amount of wet water putty and smooth with a wet paintbrush.
