    Figure I

Doll designer LaVerne Hall describes making a fabric doll designed to look like Santa.

    Materials:
    Brown fabric
    Black felt
    White fake-fur fabric
    Sewing machine
    Straight pins
    Chocolate fiber fill
Stuffing tool, knitting needle, chopstick or pencil
    White mohair doll hair
    Two pairs of red socks
    Heavy thread
    Scissors
    Pinking shears

    1. Cut four rectangular pieces of brown fabric approximately 4" wide by 12" long for the arms. Take two pieces, and with right sides together, machine-stitch down the side, across the bottom and up the other side, using a 1/4" seam allowance. Round the bottom end rather than stitching it squarely. Do the same with the other two pieces, forming both arms (figure A).

    2. Cut two rectangular pieces of brown fabric approximately 8" wide by 24" long for the body. Cut two pieces of black felt 6" wide and 2" long. Use pinking shears if desired. Place the large rectangles right sides together. Sandwich the two pieces of felt between them at one end (figure B). These will form Santa's boots. Machine-stitch down one side, stitch two scallops across the bottom (shaping for two feet), and stitch up the other side. A line of stitching will be sewn on the right side once the fabric is turned, to create the illusion of legs. Separate legs will not be stitched (figure C).

    3. Trim the seam allowances, and turn the body right side out. Start at the point between the scallops, and stitch up the body approximately 8" to create the illusion of legs (figure D).

    4. Stuff with chocolate fiber fill. Use a stuffing tool, knitting needle, chopstick or pencil (figure E).

    5. Tie a piece of heavy thread around the body at the neckline to distinguish between the head and the body, approximately 8" from the top. Stitch the arms in place right below the tie (figure F).

    6. Gather the fabric at the top of the doll, and hand-stitch at the top of the head.

    7. Cut a red sock in half straight across, level with the heel. Use the toe portion for Santa's hat (figure G).

    8. Slip the top half of the sock over the body for Santa's suit. Hand-stitch down the center at the beginning point of the legs to create the look of pants.

    9. Hot-glue white mohair doll hair on the face for the beard.

    10. Hot-glue white fake fur around the top of the black felt for the tops of the boots (figure H).

    11. Cut two more red socks straight across, level with the heel, and slip the tops of the socks over each arm. Hot-glue white fake fur at the bottom of each sleeve.

    12. Hot-glue white mohair doll hair under the hat and around the face for Santa's hair. Hot-glue white fake fur across the bottom of Santa's hat (figure I).

    13. Stuff a red sock for Santa's bag of goodies.
