Sandra Betzina, host of HGTV's Sew Perfect, makes clothes for Barbie-size dolls. She also offers tips to make sewing small items easier. Materials: Felt Narrow trim
- Sandra cut a bolero jacket out of pink felt, using no pattern (figure A).
- Add a narrow trim to the bolero, starting at the side seam. Attach the trim to the right side, using a zigzag stitch (figure B).
- After stitching, trim off excess fabric close to the trim. Felt will not fray and thus requires no overcasting (figure C).
- Make buttonholes that look authentic by sewing two rows of zigzag stitching very close together.
Tips: - Place a piece of clear tape over the large hole in the throat plate of the sewing machine so fabric won't be pushed down through the hole.
- Use 1/8" seam allowances on doll clothes.
- Hand-sew a piece of thread at the beginning of a seam to help you pull the fabric along when machine-stitching.
- When selecting trims for small doll clothes, make sure their size is proportionate to the garment. A trim suitable for adult clothing would be much too large for doll clothes.
- Try using invisible thread when stitching on trims. Or attach trims with glue.
- Regular buttons are much too large. Try hand-stitching pearls or beads instead.
