Patches are good for more than covering holes in clothing. Michele Beschen likes to take this classic fashion fix-up a step further, by creating her own hip iron-ons with appliqués, fabric, trims and other embellishments. Check out her tips below, and B. Original with custom patches of your own.

Custom Clothing PatchesMaterials: iron-on patches assortment of patterned fabrics doilies, trims and tags sewing machine or needle and thread clothes iron
- Cut images and shapes out of scrap fabric. Also, choose doilies, tags, trims and other embellishments as desired.
- Pre-wash the fabrics and trims to prevent shrinkage.
- Determine the layout of elements to the patch and tack them into place with fabric glue or pins (figure A).
- Use a sewing machine to permanently attach the items to the patch (figure B). Or, attach the items with fusible webbing.
- Finish off the patch with a zigzag stitch around the outside edges of the patch (figure C).
- Follow the directions for the iron-on patch to attach it to the garment. Add a few hand stitches around the outside of the patch to hold it securely in place.
