    (Continued from page 3)

    Rejuvenate a favorite T-shirt -- or use a brand-new one -- to make a fun fringed scarf.

    Materials:

2 large T-shirts (with silkscreened designs)
    tailor's chalk
    ruler
    scissors
    needle
    thread
    sewing machine (hand-sewing is preferable)
    hand needle

    1. Lay each T-shirt flat, measure and mark off a 16"x16" square on the front of each shirt (figure A). Divide each marked square into 8"x8" quads.

    2. Cut along the chalk lines, cutting through both layers of fabric, creating 8 squares -- fronts and backs -- from each T-shirt (figure B).

    3. Line up the squares (alternating colors) and, beginning with the first two squares, stitch right sides together. Continue working down the line until all 8 squares are sewn together. Repeat for the remaining 8 squares.

    4. Place the two strips of 8 squares together, right sides facing each other, and stitch around the outer edges, leaving a 1/2" seam allowance. Leave an opening for turning the fabric right side out. After turning the fabric, whipstitch the opening closed.

    5. Add fringe.
