    Materials:

    oilcloth
    scissors
    ruler
    pencil
    embroidery floss
    2 yards fun ribbon
    heavy-duty needle

    1. Measure your child from shoulder to shoulder across the back and add 1" to the measurement (figure A). This will determine how much fabric you need to purchase. Oilcloth comes 47" wide, so if the measurement across the shoulders is 15", you will need to purchase 16" of 47"-wide oilcloth.

    2. Cut the fabric according to the measured width. You will have a piece that is 47" long by the measured width.

3.Fold the fabric in half, right sides together, so that you have a rectangle that is as wide as the shoulder measurement + 1" and 23.5" long. Using the pencil and ruler, mark a rectangle at the center of fold that measures 5" wide by 3.5" long (figure B). This will be the opening for the head. Cutting through both layers of the fabric, cut the rectangle out (figure C). When the fabric is unfolded the rectangle should measure 5"x7".

    4. Place the smock over the child's head to determine where to place the ribbon side ties (figure D). Mark with a pencil where the ties will fit comfortably on the child. Cut the ribbon into four equal parts. Using a heavy-duty needle and embroidery floss, stitch the side ties in place (figure E).
