  • Boning
  • From "Sew Much More"
    episode SMM-302F

Whatever type of boning you choose, you will have to have a casing for it. Casing can be bought ready-made (remember to preshrink it if it's cotton) or sewn from fabric scraps you may have around the hours. Here Susan Khalje uses her leftover silk organza lining fabric to create casings.

Gone are the days of whalebone corsets! Nowadays a variety of boning materials are available, ranging from steel (at right) to plastic in several widths.

    Figure A
    Steps:

    1. Cut bone casing to 6".

Stitch across top of casing with a 1/2" seam allowance.

    2. Slide bone into casing and stitch across bottom of casing close to bone.

    3. Stitch casing to darts by hand, using a catch stitch (figure A).
