Polymer Clay Mosaic Tabletop Learn how to create a beautiful polymer clay mosaic tabletop. From "Craft Lab" episode DCLB-104

Guest Laurie Mika joins host Jennifer Perkins and demonstrates how to make tiles out of white polymer clay and apply designs onto the tiles using a knife and rubber stamps. The tiles are then painted with acrylic paints.

The tiles are arranged like a puzzle on a gold plywood base and glued down to create a unique mosaic design. Finally, the tabletop is assembled by placing the board into a metal frame.

Materials:

1' square piece of 1/4" wood or handy backer board
gold spray paint
approximately 60 tiles of 1/4" commercial glass or ceramic tile for border
1 large (1.75 lb.) box of white Sculpey polymer clay
wax paper
clay blade
rolling pin
non-serrated kitchen knife
2 roasting pans with clips
assorted paintbrushes
acrylic paint
Sculpey Gloss Glaze
seed beads
Weldbond adhesive
jewelry adhesive

Polymer Clay Mosaic Tabletop

1. Cut a piece of wood or plywood the size of your table frame, and then spray it gold.

2. Roll out white Sculpey into desired thickness (approx. 1/8" thick) on a piece of wax paper using a rolling pin.

3. Cut out strips of clay and then cut into smaller "tile" pieces using a clay blade—cut various sizes.

4. Score designs into the tiles using a non-serrated knife.

5. Bake as directed in an enclosed roasting pan clipped with butterfly clips.

6. Take outside to vent and cool.

7. Paint the tiles in a variety of color groups (figure A) using acrylic paints.

8. Glue glass or ceramic tiles around the wood to create a border.

9. Lay out painted tiles on wood (like putting together a jigsaw puzzle).

10. Glue down tiles with Weldbond.

11. Fill in the cracks and spaces with jewelry adhesive and seed beads as grout and then let dry.

12. Varnish the tiles with Sculpey gloss glaze.
