    Waterslide Decal Frame

    Materials:

Lazertran waterslide decal paper for inkjet printer
    5" x 7" glass clipped frame
1/16" or 1/8" striping tape in gold or silver (used for pen striping cars)
    spray polyurethane
    paintbrush
    scissors
    picture
squeegee or store brand card (similar to a credit card)

    Steps:

    1. Remove the glass from the frame by removing the clips off the frame. You will only be working on the glass.

    2. Create a simple deco style design for the frame (figure A) making sure to leave the center portion open for the picture. The opening can be rectangular or oval.

    3. Cut out the blank center portion of the decal with scissors or a straight razor and spray with polyurethane (figure B). This will turn the paper from white to a transparent appearance. You may need to spray three coats.

4 Optional: Paint the slab with liquid clay called "slip." This allows for some color to be added to the background of the image.

    5. Soak the decal in water for two minutes

    6. Slide backing paper onto the glass. The decal comes with a layer of glue that will adhere to the glass or plastic.

    7. Use your fingers or a small squeegee (figure C) to release air bubbles caught between the decal and the glass. Allow the decal to dry for 24 hours.

    8. Coat the edge of the glass with nail polish (figure D) to seal the frame.

    9. Add either gold or silver striping tape to the frame (figure E). This tape has a glue backing but when possible, wrap the ends around the edge of the frame. For sharp angles or points, cut the tape with a single-edged razor blade or craft knife before applying it to the frame

    10. Coat the decal and striping tape with another coat of polyurethane. Let dry.

    11. Insert a selected photo and reassemble the art-deco frame (figure F).

    Tips:

    • Deco designs were generally simple and geometric, using lines, squares and circles. Locate many copyright-free designs suitable for this project in clipart books and CDs.
    • Slip is an oil-based product (liquid clay) and needs to be used in a well-ventilated area.
