Craft expert Kathi Cardinalli shares a few ideas for creating luminaries from hardware materials.
- First, select material. Each hardware store will offer decorative aluminum in a wide variety of colors and patterns (figure A). Other options are chicken wire (covered with rice paper) and screen.
- Begin with a tin can (for small luminaries) or large coffee can (in which candle has been placed) as the base.
- Cut decorative aluminum or screen to desired size and wrap around can so that it meets in the center (figure B).
- Feed wire through mesh or openings at the center and twist to secure (figure C).
