Involve all of the senses, including the sense of smell, when creating a romantic atmosphere. Scent expert Dolores M. Vinci describes a variety of options for adding an air of romance to your home.

Use scented candles throughout your home: the combination of flickering light and pleasing scent will give any room a relaxed, mellow mood. Men tend to prefer more musky or outdoorsy scents, whereas women often prefer florals.

Scent sticks are back and more popular than ever. Burn a stick of vanilla or raspberry incense in the kitchen to make it smell like you've been baking all day.

Use uncommon containers, such as a pretty teacup or coffee cup, to display scented potpourri throughout the house. A porcelain soap dish filled with potpourri is a pretty addition to the bathroom (figure A).

A scent pot is a two-part ceramic or metal container fitted with a candle that heats a scented bowl of water. Fill the bowl with water and a few drops of fragrance scent or essential oil. Light a small candle beneath to release the scent softly throughout the room.
